Super-sized stadium raving could be the future
The head honcho of Sankeys, Manchester’s longest running club, has submitted plans for a 16,000 capacity concert venue. The new venue, to be called Stadium Point, is located on the Quays and developers hope to see it become ‘the world’s premiere standup Live and Electronic music entertainment venue…in the same vein as the London 02.’
It is currently a derelict warehouse owned by the Manchester United football club and situated near Old Trafford. David Vincent, the force behind Sankeys has planned to spend a hefty 5 million quid on it, he told the Evening News, “Artists are holding a lot more concerts now as they are not making much money from records anymore, so arenas are a growth area. People love to dance and in Manchester we only have indoor venues to cater on a regular basis for up to 6–7,000 people standing, but we will have a great floor space for up to 16,000.”
Despite the renovation creating 250 jobs the venue faces opposition from some local politicians citing transport links and crowd control. Rumor has it that it’s been pulled, at least temporarily, after a public backlash. Apparently Vincent has withdrawn the license application, saying he wants to hold a full public consultation to address concerns. Boo.
I for one am not hanging up my raving boots in defeat yet, lets watch this space...
