The Plastic Geordie

Hello there! I’m Sean, 19 and a first year PR & Marketing student at Leeds Met. I’m from right up north, a little village called Brandon in the sleepy county of Durham. Some people seem quite disappointed when they realise I’m not from Newcastle, referring to me as a ‘Plastic Geordie'. I love Leeds, the people, the nightlife, the campus and the sheer number of Greggs there are! But most importantly, some great opportunities have come my way including a placement here at Rising Digital. Being a passionate lover of filthy dub, naughty electro, bouncy fidget and anything you can’t help but bust a move to the instant you hear it, I jumped at the chance of getting stuck into the music industry.

My hobby (besides stamp collecting and knitting) is watching rugby union and I'm a passionate fan of the Falcons. I also love DJs that actually mix one track into the next, instead of simply playing one cheesy pop song after another. My favourite artists are The Prodigy, Deadmau5, Fake Blood, Feed Me, SkrillexBoy8Bit, ... to name but a few. I’m also a fervent follower of the legend that is Annie Mac and would marry her tomorrow if I had the chance. I never miss her incredible Mash Up on Radio 1 every Friday night and suggest you don’t either :)

Avalanche Promo Mix mixed by Pete Zorba by AvalancheIbiza

Posted February 2, 2011 by email

Hello!

Hi, my name is Leah and I am here to introduce myself as one of the new interns at Rising Digital. I come from a small town in Kent called Tunbridge Wells and before coming to Leeds to study a degree in Public Relations and Marketing the furthest I had ventured up North was London. Tunbridge Wells doesn't have much, if any, music scene and I regularly travelled to London to experience the wonderful world of Drum and Bass raves in clubs such as Fabric and Matter. I only discovered Drum and Bass a few years ago and after years of my 80s loving stepfather drilling the likes of Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen into my musical vocabulary, the change was refreshing.

As I sat updating my Spotify playlist with a variety of new songs; Katy B, Chase and Status and Damien Rice to name a few, I saw the opportunity to work at Rising Digital. The minute I saw music, PR and social media I knew I had to go for it. Social media is a strong passion of mine; and one I have tried to develop through my time at University. I went for it and here I am, your new intern at Rising Digital. I am so excited to start; learn new things and work with the team - they all seem great!

Frixo - 'Live' Traffic Reports

Screen_shot_2011-01-14_at_10

This one came across my desk this week, or rather screen and I thought it was worth sharing with you. I myself am a road warrior no longer, but I am still vaguely haunted by those endless days stuck in traffic, with the M62 and M6 being prime locations for such pursuits.

I did used to check the travel before I left, but there wasn't really any site that cut the mustard or gave me the answers I was looking for. Only if there had been a severe accident would I know there was travel disruption, otherwise just hazy reports.

Now here's where Frixo comes in! From initial investigations I must admit I'm liking this little beauty! It provides road traffic information from data that is updated every 5 minutes, using sensors placed on motorways and common A/B roads. For old time sake I filled out a journey along the M62 and volia, hey presto, abracadabra I knew the average speed at every junction, the average speed of the motorway today and any incidents that may have occurred.

I haven't checked the site out more than this in all honesty, but from what I've seen it's a pretty nifty tool for all you travellers out there. Let me know what you think!

Mini Rant on the state of saturated market and poor blogging...

After four days of meetings this week, one thing is abundantly clear. The music market is COMPLETELY over-saturated. Everyone knows how easy it is for wannabe producers to get logic or ableton set up and start cracking on. But then it's what happens after that amazes me. Do you think any respected artist would approach a record label with a tune or EP and say... "Hey Sony, what d'you think of this? Fancy it?." That is in essence what artists, smaller labels and people like us hear hundreds of times a day. The music is no-where near ready to be played out, let alone signed... even to a smaller indie label.

What stands out to me is that whilst there is SO much music available now, the guys who make the good stuff, the beats that really make the hairs on your back stand up, like a Seb Ingrosso 'Kidsos' or something... look at them... you'll be lucky to get more than 4 releases a year. But still, amongst many of his peers, there will be those who feel they need to be putting out at least one track a month out, just to maintain progression and flow. It's a shame really. I personally am hoping for a bit of a u-turn with all this. Go back to the days when I was always out, a 'floor-filler' would last at least 4 months...

Miike Snow - Silvia (Sebastian Ingrosso & Dirty South Remix) by SebastianIngrosso

Also, all you music bloggers out there, in my opinion, if you're looking to maintain a solid perception and loyal fan-base, you've got a duty to report on what is quality rather than simply aggregate all info that comes your way. Otherwise people might as well download NewsFire or whatever. Blogging is supposed to be about sharing your feelings and thoughts on a topic, not simply posting links to every single thing that comes your way. Get some good content going and you'll be amazed at how much more your readers will respect and comment, not simply just RT RT RT RT... I think the swedish blogger community have got it totally locked down, although I can only speak Norwegian so some of the slang is lost on me. But still - good work. The other people I have some love for are those tagged by the Hype Machine... all seems nice and legit too. I guess the success is based on the fact they implement standards
